APPROACH
Full pipeline — development to delivery
THE SITUATION
The brief
Upplang asked for a cinematic CGI film that brings its electric toothbrush into an unexpected encounter with a photoreal seahorse. The product needed to feel clean and refined, while the character introduced curiosity and a sense of wonder.
THE CHALLENGE
The challenge
The challenge was to make two very different subjects belong together. The seahorse needed believable eyes, body language, and translucent detail; the toothbrush needed a clear silhouette and readable materials. Their connection had to come from performance—not simply sharing the frame.
Behind the encounter
01
DEVELOPMENT
Finding the relationship between an organic character and a precision-made product.
Curiosity leads the reveal
The seahorse is the audience’s guide. A glance, a turn of the head, and a cautious approach create the emotional path toward the toothbrush. This visual direction brings together the product’s clean silhouette, the creature’s translucent detail, and the contrast between dark atmosphere and bright product imagery.

02
PRE-PRODUCTION
Making curiosity readable through staging, eye direction, and camera timing.
Visual sequence
Silhouette. Discovery. Contact. Connection. The sequence moves from an atmospheric encounter to an open, high-key product world, with each shot bringing the viewer closer to the toothbrush.

Performance before polish
The solid viewport preview establishes the sequence’s framing, timing, camera movement, and character interaction. The simplified surfaces keep attention on the seahorse’s gaze, movement, and relationship with the product.
Staging the encounter
Viewport stills show the creature model, paired composition, brush-head interaction, and full scene framing.
Gaze, contact, and composition
The remaining blocking views follow the character performance, the brighter setting, tail contact, and final composition.
03
PRODUCTION
Bringing performance, translucent detail, and clean product surfaces into one visual world.
From movement to the finished frame
Camera blocking and character performance establish the relationship before the final surface detail. This side-by-side view pairs the finished image on the left with the solid viewport on the right, showing how staging and timing carry through into the rendered film.
Building the light
Five shot breakdowns reveal the lighting contributions progressively: the product silhouette, the seahorse’s translucent body, the brush-head encounter, the approach, and the close interaction.
01 — Product silhouette
02 — Translucent detail
03 — Brush-head encounter
04 — Approach
05 — Close interaction
04
POST-PRODUCTION
Refining the edit and the final image in DaVinci Resolve, with a closer look at color finishing.
Color finishing
The breakdown stays with one shot so the changes in brightness, contrast, and color can be seen directly. It shows how the final treatment shapes the seahorse’s translucent detail and the separation of the toothbrush against the dark background.

A product reveal with character
The finished film moves from discovery to a coordinated dance, then opens into clean product beauty shots. Creature performance, product animation, lighting, and finishing work together to keep the toothbrush at the heart of the story.
